About
The University of Westminster's staff and students would like to present this record and reflection of experimental art that challenges the boundaries between our primary sense of smell and our complex interpretation of literature.
We are interested in the connections that can be made between Scent and Literature and aim to create our own perfume in response to a novel or short story. We wonder if it is possible to present a narrative as a scent.
A scent, whether fragrant or odorous, can directly associate memories with emotion as well as an emotion with an object. Often the smell of a place you've forgotten can be what takes you back there and allows you to remember.
However, within two minutes of smelling something, our senses become accustomed to it; scent can be a fleeting as memory.
Our project aims to explore the idea that associations made by scent can be manipulated and can mirror a place in a novel that may not even exist. Yet if you can smell it, it could be real.
